Almond Milk- Why You've Gotta Try It!
As allergies to dairy products continue to rise, so do the choices for alternatives. My favorite dairy alternative is definitely Almond milk. *Blue Diamond Almond Breeze brand to be specific. This non-dairy beverage made from almonds has a smooth and creamy flavor that far surpasses such choices as rice and soy milk.
Don’t have an allergy to milk? Don’t let that stop you!
My personal favorite is the Unsweetened Vanilla flavor. With only 40 calories per 8 oz. serving, it’s hard to beat calorie-wise. Besides being extremely low in calories the unsweetened varieties (original, vanilla, and chocolate) have ZERO grams of sugar. (For comparison sake, Milk contains 12 grams of “natural” sugar per 8 oz. and 2% has 130 calories.)
Almond Breeze does sell sweetened varieties of both the vanilla and chocolate flavors. With 15 grams of sugar per serving, it makes a great substitute for those non-dairy sweeteners that some of us (guiltily!) add to our morning coffee.
Although we do not have dairy allergies in our household and don’t drink almond milk by the glassful, I end up buying a lot of it. I love using Almond Breeze as a substitute for milk in all of my cooking. It adds a lovely flavor to such goodies as rice pudding and pre-packaged pudding mixes, plus cuts the calories at least in half (depending what kind of milk you buy- whole, 2%, nonfat). One can not tell the difference in pancakes, waffles and other baked goods. The unsweetened chocolate flavor doesn’t taste a bit like chocolate to me, however add a spoonful of Ovaltine and it makes a rich, creamy and delicious chocolate milk that contains less sugar, fewer calories and sacrifices none of the goodness of milk.
“But does it build strong bones?”
Yes! It is fortified with Calcium, Vitamins A, D and as an added bonus, because it’s made from almonds, provides 50% of the Vitamin E that we need per day!
With such atrocities as the tainted infant formula in China, it’s important to know where your food is coming from. Almond Breeze is grown, packaged and sold in the USA!
Smoothies, on your morning bowl of cereal, in your famous banana bread, once you get started it’s hard to stop!
Be sure to let us know if you try Almond Milk, the brand and what you think of it!

Hi Alison – I like your new format .
I bought Almond Milk today and tried it. It does have a light fragrance in the taste that is delightful. I came back to read this write up because I hadn’t remembered if you said to substitute it for milk or not. I’m glad you are so careful about it. It DOES have great Vit E, especially. I would warn that it has a lack of protein. I gram per cup compared to 9 grams in milk – one of the reasons dairy foods are so valuable-protein building blocks for growth . It would be great to add to coffe and baking as you suggest. It is so creamy and yet so low in calories! Thanks.
Maybe here is a potential idea for an article? have heard women be surprised that non-fat and low-fat milk have the same amount of protein (and calcium) that whole mik has. But it does. It’s only the fat that is taken out.
